Undergraduate visits Smithsonian Ant Lab

Cardenas and Schultz NMNH

Last week, Cody Cardenas, an undergraduate researcher in the Adams' Lab, visited the Ant Lab at the National Museum of Natural History. Cody met and worked with Dr. Ted Schultz (pictured) to differentiate between species of ants using morphological characters. Using type specimens from various museums allows researchers to obtain a larger sample size of morphological attributes. Cody is currently researching whether a previously synonymized fungus-gardening ant species should be resurrected, or if a new species should be described.
