The Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology at Ohio State was formed in 1998 when the Department of Zoology merged with the organismal-focused faculty from the Department of Plant Biology. This was a time when many animal- and plant-focused departments across the country were being restructured along organizational lines (Cellular & Molecular, Organismal) rather than the tradional taxonomonically organized departments. Few of the latter remain but there are good reasons that either type of structuring can succeed. The remaining faculty in the Department of Plant Biology were then renamed the Department of Plant Cellular and Molecular Biology. Most recently, those faculty have joined the Department of Molecular Genetics.
